Manual lymphatic drainage massage (also known as MLD) is a type of gentle massage which is intended to encourage the natural drainage which carries waste products away from the tissues. During MLD therapy a specific amount of pressure and rhythmic circular movements to stimulate lymph flow are used.
Manual lymphatic drainage encourages the movement of the lymphatic system, which reduces swelling and puffiness, induces relaxation, and improves the skin’s tone and texture. Manual lymphatic drainage was originally developed by Emil and Estrid Vodder, both physical therapists in the 1930s.
