Of the three central Buddenbrook siblings, Thomas is partially based on Mann’s own father, Christian on his uncle Friedrich Wilhelm, and Tony on his aunt Elisabeth. At the same time, the tension between Thomas and Christian derives much of its force from Thomas’s rivalry with his older brother Heinrich Mann.
