I love 5E3’s built a fair few, anyone who decides to build one could do no better than to buy kits from Bruce Collins at Mission amps, great quality parts from a bloke who knows more about Tweeds than most and he’s a great source of helpful info and tips on one or two forums.

The thing with the kits isthe heart and soul of the amp are the transformers (especially the OT) and the speaker. Carbon Comp resistors are over rated, metal films and carbon films are just fine. For coupling caps, polyester has the right sound to them (Mallry 150 or OD 225), polypropylene like OD 716’s are sterile sounding.

I bought the small parts Kit and chassis here at Mojotone and it was much easier than sourcing all of the parts individually and the chassis is just beautiful.
A first time builder and I truly love my 5E3 amp purchased from TubeDepot. Following well written and clearly illustrated instructions the amp was an easy and fun build which I thoroughly enjoyed. Using onboard controls my 5E3 amp produces beautiful crisp clear highs and mellow low sounds.
5E3’s sound glorious with Tele’s, but in stock form can be a little too loose with LP’s. Mission has an add-on kit that addresses this and there are a few other mods floating around the interwebz if this is a concern after the initial build. Great amp design and I’m leaning towards a 5E3 for my next build.
