Patient furious about screening turned diagnostic colonoscopy We have a patient who came in for a 10-year followup colonoscopy (personal history of colon polyps). However, in the MD visit right before the procedure, he made mention of several (MANY) symptoms he had been having, all relating to
clarify billing instructions for the Medicare beneficiary who 1) presents for a screening colonoscopy (or flexible sigmoidoscopy), 2) has no gastrointestinal symptoms, and 3) during their screening colonoscopy (or flexible sigmoidoscopy), have an abnormality identified (such as a polyp, etc.) which is biopsied or removed.
In their new colorectal screening guidelines, the American College of Gastroenterology, says that colonoscopy, beginning at age 50 and performed every 10 years, is the “preferred” screening test for colorectal cancer. They recommend that physicians first offer this test alone rather than a menu of
