The Good Music Guide Classical Music Forum. Welcome, Guest. Topic: Choose your top five Bach Cantatas. I’ve had the luck to listen to only a few of them: Actus Tragicus, BWV 140 and BWV 198. All of these works are fantastic.
Bach borrowed an existing melody, a tune written by another composer, and used it as the melody of the tenors. This tune is a chorale, a congregational hymn of the Lutheran church.
Cantata 140 is one of Bach’s most famous and best-loved works. It is a chorale cantata and uses a very famous chorale, “Wachet auf”, which appears in many Christian hymnals. Like the chorale heard in Cantata 1 , this chorale was written by Philipp Nicolai.
