These limitations affect the thickness and possibility of complex coatings. To address these challenges, Deposition Sciences, Inc. (DSI) developed their batch coating technology, MicroDyn ® . This unique process utilizes a proprietary magnetron sputtering chamber that was custom designed to address the challenges of high throughput coating.
Coating – How the PVD sputtering process works important coating process to produce these layers is called sputter deposition. This Animation shows how it works. Category Science & Technology; Sputtering is a Physical Vapor Deposition vacuum process used to deposit very thin films onto a substrate for a wide variety of commercial and scientific purposes. Sputtering occurs when an ionized gas molecule is used to displace atoms of a specific material. These atoms then bond at the atomic level to a substrate and create a thin film.
Exactly how does the sputtering process work? First your coating materials are placed on a magnetron in a solid form called a target. For highly pure coatings you need a clean environment with only materials of your choosing. This is why the chamber is evacuated, to remove almost every molecule from the chamber.
Coating methods include Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) and one technique is called Sputtering. The sputtering method of thin film deposition involves introducing a controlled gas, usually chemically inert argon, into a vacuum chamber, and electrically energizing a cathode to establish a self sustaining plasma.
Sputter Coating 4 Sputter Coating It has been indicated that under conditions of glow discharge, ion bombardment of the cathode will occur. This results in the erosion of the cathode material and is termed plasma sputtering, with the subsequent omni-directional deposition of the sputtered atoms forming coatings of the original

SPUTTERING DC Sputtering – Sputtering can be achieved by applying large (~2000) DC voltages to the target (cathode). A plasma discharge will be established and the Ar+ ions will be attracted to and impact the target sputtering off target atoms. In DC sputtering the target must be Rochester Institute of Technology Microelectronic Engineering
