Can’t remember M22 first gear ratio, but it’s significantly higher than 3.05:1 – up around the 3.5??. L34 close ratio Aussie 4 speed is 2.32:1, and rare as all Hell (think these ratios were homologated for the XU-1 as well). This info is irrespective of whether it’s a 6 or an 8 box.

The magazine top speed tests of 6 speed manual Holdens/HSVs, from VR to VY always found a higher top speed in 5th (0.74) then in 6th (0.50) and that was irrespective of diff ratio, 3.45, 3.73 or 3.91. In fact with a T56 and 3.45 gears, theoretical top speed in 6th was something near 400kph!!! The car simply lacked the torque to push on in 6th.
