I just read the Wiki for the Millwall brick and the use of a newspaper in this way definitely pre-dates the sixties, when I was a kid at primary school in the fifties the father of one my friends who was a Royal Marine Commando in WWII showed us how to use a paper in this way and it was something he knew from before the war.
