If you have a shape layer that you want to use as a mask for another layer you could just use a regular clipping mask like I describe [here].To add a vector mask to layer, follow these steps: Select the layer in the Layers panel and choose Layer>Vector Mask>Reveal All or Hide All. Choose Window>Paths. Select the Pen tool or grab any of the Shape tools. On the vector mask, create the desired shape for your vector mask.

Here’s how to create a vector mask. Do one of two things: Depending on your choice in Step 1, draw your path with the Pen tool or your shape with the Shape tool. Select Mask mode on the Options bar. Note that the image is hidden outside of the path of the vector mask.
