.Generally, fsck is run either automatically at boot time, or manually by the system administrator. The command works directly on data structures stored on disk, which are internal and specific to the particular file system in use – so an fsck command tailored to the file system is generally required.
For some filesystem-specific checkers, the -y option will cause the fs-specific fsck to always attempt to fix any detected filesystem corruption automatically. Sometimes an expert may be able to do better driving the fsck manually. Note that not all filesystem-specific checkers implement this option.
fsck is used to check and optionally repair one or more Linux file systems, Do not run fsck on a live or mounted file system. Running fsck on a mounted filesystem can usually result in disk and/or data corruption. If no filesystems are specified on the command line, fsck will default to checking filesystems in /etc/fstab serially. This is Example: Using Fsck to Check and Repair a Filesystem. This procedure provides a basic example on how to use fsck and other Linux commands to check and repair a filesystem. Pre-requisites: You must be locally connected to the PSM server (rather than remotely using telnet or ssh).
In this example, inode 242000 was an inode that was moved to lost+found during a previous xfs_repair run. This run of xfs_repair found that the file system is consistent. If the lost+found directory had been empty, in phase 4 only the messages about clearing and deleting the lost+found directory would have appeared.
